1. Hold Off on Planting and Hard Cutbacks

August is a risky month to plant. Between the extreme heat and monsoon storms, new transplants are especially vulnerable, and the heat only makes it worse. The same goes for heavy pruning. Light trimming is fine, but a big cutback stresses even hardy plants, because that canopy is what shades the branches and trunk from sunburn. Strip too much off in August and you can lose the plant.

2. Check Your Palm Trees

Yellowing, leaf drop, and browning are usually signs of stress, not a dead plant, and most bounce back in the fall. And if a plant does die, that is typical in the intense summer heat too.
