December Yard Updates for the East Valley
Here are three key yard updates to help you prepare your landscape for December and the cooler months ahead.
1. Overnight Freezing Temperatures Are Returning
After an unusually warm and rainy November, temperatures are finally starting to fall right on time for winter to officially begin on December 21. As always, keep an eye out for freezing overnight temperatures.
On nights that drop to 32°F or below, make sure to protect plants that are susceptible to frost damage. You can cover them with tarps, blankets, or frost cloths specifically designed for cold protection.
Common frost-sensitive plants include:
-
Lantana
-
Bougainvillea
-
Hibiscus
-
Birds of Paradise
-
Arizona Yellow/Orange/Red Bells
-
Natal Plum (Boxwood Beauties)
A quick covering can make all the difference in keeping these plants healthy through the winter.
2. December Is the Ideal Month for Pre-Emergent Treatment
December is one of the two recommended months for pre-emergent weed control, the other being June. We schedule these treatments exactly six months apart so they are applied ahead of the major rainy seasons.
Applying pre-emergent now helps prevent weeds from germinating for up to six months, meaning far fewer weeds popping up as we move into spring.
3. Plants Are Slowing Down, and Trees Will Drop Their Leaves
As temperatures cool, most plants begin to grow more slowly. This also means trees will start shedding their leaves throughout December.
With the holidays approaching, many homeowners like to give their yard a clean up before family and guests arrive. If you need help tidying up fallen leaves, trimming, or getting everything looking clean and ready for the season, our team is always happy to lend a hand.
